Osteoarthritis - What is It

The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis ...

Rarely occuring in people under 40, the incidence increases with age.

When osteoarthritis does occur in people under 40,

they are more likely to be males.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease.

Osteoarthritis mostly affects the hands, feet, knees, hips and spine.

Causes of Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is caused by the breakdown and eventual loss of the cartilage of the joints, which is a protein that acts as a cushion between the bones and joints.

If the cause of osteoarthritis is not known (usually the case), it is referred to as primary osteoarthritis and is normally related to age.

Other factors are excessive repetitive use of limbs / joints

or in some cases it could be genetically linked.

When the cause is known, it is referred to as secondary osteoarthritis.

Examples of known causes are:

  • Diabetes
  • Limb abnormalities
  • Gout
  • Hormone disorders
  • Trauma
  • Obesity

Osteoarthritis - Symptoms

It should be noted that osteoarthritis is a disease of the joints and does not affect other organs in the body, as RA would do.

Some of the main symptoms of OA include:

  • Swollen joints
  • Painful joints
  • Stiff joints
  • Possible deformity
  • Restricted movement

Osteoarthritis - Treatments

If you believe you have osteoarthritis, it is advisable to see your doctor. Some of the available treatments for osteoarthritis are:

  • Self care programs - weight loss & exercise
  • OTC medicines like paracetamol for mild cases
  • Prescription Medicines - although effective may have side effects
  • Steroids
  • Anti inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen
  • Natural Remedies - supplements such as glucosamine
  • Surgery - joint replacement e.g hips or knee

A good practice is to consult your doctor regarding the best choice suitable for your particular osteoarthritis situation.
