Rheumatoid Arthritis - Causes

What triggers RA is not known ...

Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints that occurs when the body tissues are attacked (mistakenly) by it's own immune system.

Inflammation of the joints or joint linings

results in rheumatoid arthritis.

Although rheumatoid arthritis can occur at any age, people aged over 45 have a greater chance of getting it and the frequencyof women getting RA is 3 times greater than for men.

Most people suffering from RA have very mild symptons, but for the unfortunate few,

it can be a chronic and progressive illness that may result in disability.

If you believe you have RA, it is advisable to see your doctor. Some of the available treatments for rheumatoid arthritis are:

  • Topical Painkillers & Analgesics - only effective for mild cases
  • Prescription Medicines - although effective may have side effects
  • Self Care - Nutritional diet, weight loss & exercise

  • Surgery - Replacement or fusion of damaged joints

A good practice is to consult your doctor regarding the best choice suitable for your particular rheumatoid arthritis situation.
